Notes from Calvary

Barr smile shot.jpeg

Calvary folks--

I invite all parents of children and youth (birth through high school) to gather in the Parish Hall during Refreshment Hour on Sunday, Sept. 8th for a conversation about what shape ministries with children and youth can take in 2019-2020.

How can the parish best support parents/families as you nurture our youngest members “to grow into the full stature of Christ” (the baptismal promise made by parents and godparents)? We will brainstorm what sort of Sunday morning structure will work best and Dr. Matthew Provost, our organist & choirmaster, will talk about the children’s music program.

The Rev. Gillian R. Barr, Rector

Covenant to Care Backpacks

Gillian and backpacks.jpg

The school year is off to a great start for 26 local foster children, thanks to Calvary parishioners! On Sunday, August 18, Reverend Gillian Barr blessed the overstuffed backpacks. On Monday, social workers from the Department of Children and Family Services, Lentionette Taylor and Gwendolyn Williams, picked up the bags for distribution to the students.

One of the success stories shared by our liaisons from DCF: The college student we supported with school supplies last year was on the Dean’s list both semesters and is beginning her sophomore year this fall. Your support matters!

Thank you again for your generosity, Calvary!!

Calvary to Host Ugandan Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) Singers

Tuesday, 9/24 - Wednesday, 10/2

AYF singers.jpg

Many parishioners will recognize Peter Kasamba, the founder of the AYF Singers, at the far right in the photograph. Your editor Betsy Stevenson will always remember the wonderful care Peter took of her and Sage MacLeod during our health needs assessment trip to Uganda two years ago.

The AYF Singers will spend their weeklong visit performing in schools and leading worship services in the region. Look for their schedule in next week's issue.

Volunteers are needed to help with housing, transportation and meals for the 10 singers during their stay. Please prayerfully consider if you can lend a hand.

If you are able to help, or have any questions about what is needed, please contact Barbara Loftus at (860) 599-5732 or

Thank You,
Calvary Uganda Mission Team
