Notes from Calvary

(The Notes are not going on August hiatus after all: the rest of the staff is pitching in to get them so everybody can know about all that's going on !)

Calvary folks--

On Thursday I met with a reporter and photographer team from the Westerly Sun who are writing a feature story about Calvary having a new rector. Before they arrived, I made sure to think of a list of distinctive characteristics I wanted to share about Calvary, so I could express them enthusiastically and clearly. (We'll see whether or not I was successful when the story comes out!)

Reflecting on those key points was a very helpful exercise. First I brainstormed and wrote down all sorts of things gathered from my first three weeks here and my reading of the parish history and other documents. Then I focused in on a few things which seemed most important to share and that might catch a reporter's interest.

Calvary as a parish did something like this as part of the transition process, as you wrote your profile. But it's also something that it would be good for every member of Calvary to think about. What would your "elevator speech" about Calvary be?

"If someone I'd never met before, who is curious about Christianity and the community, asked me what is particularly distinctive about Calvary, and how it makes a difference in my life and in the greater Stonington/Mystic/Westerly communities, what would I say?"

In the coming weeks I will meet many of you in various small-group "Meet the Rector" events. I'd love to hear your "elevator speech" about Calvary!
