Dear Calvary Friends:

They say when a birthing mother goes through labor the time called "transition" is the most painful. Calvary Church has been in transition these many months, going through stages of grief, reflection, hard work, hope discernment, decision-making and now anticipation. The Rev. Gillian Barr will enter into the life of this phenomenal community of faith as your Rector, bringing new energy into the vivid common life you share. Together, in the Spirit, you will honor what is traditional and familiar and move, with her, further into our challenging twenty-first century world.

This Sunday's scripture readings speak to the challenges of transition. Elijah, after Moses the greatest Old Testament prophet, begins the process of turning his authority over to his successor. Jesus tells willing followers to join him, but not to look back, even to bury a father! Paul addresses new Christians who struggle with a transition from pagan practices to Christian discipleship. His words from his letter to the Galatians ring as true today as they did two thousand years ago,

"... the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control... If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit."

Many blessings,
