Dear members and friends of Calvary Church:

As I near the end of my second full week as your interim priest, I want to thank you all for the gracious welcome you have given me in our short time together. Whether it be the Wardens, the staff, the Vestry or any of the many faithful souls who accomplish so much in this community of faith, all have been gracious and helpful to this unfamiliar priest as he jumps into the life of this busy place at the beginning of Lent.

I bring with me habits and practices from my previous calls as a priest. In that spirit, I recommend to you all a little book, much like Forward Day by Day. I welcome you to take with you as you leave on Sunday morning Lenten Meditations 2019, a publication of Episcopal Relief and Development. This slender booklet contains reflections for each day of Lent from Episcopal leaders, such as our Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Michael Curry. I heartily recommend it as a simple way to bring our role in taking care of this beautiful and broken world into our Lenten thoughts.

Many blessings,
Norman

Abundant blessings & best wishes.

The Gift of Joy and Wonder

Turning in Lent Toward the Glory of Creation

Wednesday Evenings in Lent: March 13 to April 10

For the Beauty of Earth
March 20

The second session of this year's Lenten program, The Gift of Joy and Wonder, will focus on the ancient element the Greeks called earth: the rocks, soils, sands, hills and mountains upon which we lead our lives. We will take a look at the beauty and wonder of God's Creation as expressed through the solid world around us.

In the language of the Bible, the word “repent” means to “turn.” Calvary’s Lenten study this year will turn toward beauty, awe and wonder, led by the Rev. Norman MacLeod. These hours will be dedicated to remembering, seeing, learning about and celebrating God’s Earth, of which we are made. We will explore and celebrate the glory of God as we see and know it in Stonington and beyond.

The study will begin Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall, beginning with a simple Lenten meal of soup and bread. Each session will close before 8 p.m. Each week will have a theme.

March 13 – Creation
March 20 – Earth
March 27 – Water
April 3 – Air
April 10 – Fire

And, about those soup dinners....

Many thanks to the outstanding chefs who have volunteered to provide the soup on:

March 13 - Laura Paige
March 20: Jim and Mary McCauley
March 27 - Jennifer Parsons
April 3 - Candy Sanford
April 10: Karen McGee

All are welcome to show up for the Lenten studies. However, signing up in the parish hall this Sunday will help our chefs know how much soup to make. Thank you!

United Thank Offering

It has long been the tradition at Calvary Church that during Lent the United Thank Offering blue boxes appear at the end of each pew.

We hope you will each take a blue box home and place coins and bills in it as you remember things for which you are especially thankful, family, friends, good health, sunsets, rainbows, snow (and snow plows) and each new day. The boxes will be collected during services on the second Sunday after Easter (May 5th) and every penny collected will go to grants given by the Episcopal Church to those in need both in this country and around the world.

The United Thank Offering program was started in 1889 by the women of the church who collected coins to support grants for mission and ministry all over the world. A wonderful example is a grant given in 1952 to Bishop Gordon of Alaska. It was used to purchase an airplane so that he could reach his scattered parishes. In thanks for receiving the grant he named the plane “Blue Box”.

Envelopes and additional blue boxes may be found at the back of the church if anyone would like to give a single gift.
