Notes From Calvary
Liturgies this Sunday, March 8, 2019
Holy Eucharist, Rite I at 8 AM
Holy Eucharist, Rite II at 10 AM
Dear Calvary members and friends:
As Matthew, Calvary organist and choirmaster, wrote about last week, Lent signals changes in how we worship together. We refrain from proclaiming “Alleluia” for the Sundays of the season. Beyond that, Episcopal churches often shift to different forms of prayers as we embrace this Lenten time of reflection.
Like a jewel, our Anglican worship benefits from the sight of our celebration from different angles. Small variations in the words we say and the songs we sing reveal new depths and can touch our hearts and feed our souls in new ways.
When we return to more familiar forms, we hear these in new and richer ways as well.
I invite you to a Holy Lent, as we pray together in the full richness of our tradition, making us stronger in our work to join God’s mission of healing and reconciliation for this beautiful and broken world.
Abundant blessings & best wishes.
The Gift of Joy and Wonder
Turning in Lent Toward the Glory of Creation
Wednesday Evenings in Lent: March 13 to April 10
In the language of the Bible, the word “repent” means to “turn.” Calvary’s Lenten study this year will turn toward beauty, awe and wonder, led by the Rev. Norman MacLeod. These hours will be dedicated to remembering, seeing, learning about and celebrating God’s Earth, of which we are made. We will explore and celebrate the glory of God as we see and know it in Stonington and beyond.
The study will begin Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall, beginning with a simple Lenten meal of soup and bread. Each session will close before 8 p.m. Each week will have a theme.
March 13 – Creation
March 20 – Earth
March 27 – Water
April 3 – Air
April 10 – Fire
And, about those soup dinners....
Many thanks to the outstanding chefs who have volunteered to provide the soup on:
March 13 - Laura Paige
March 20: Jim and Mary McCauley
March 27 - Jennifer Parsons
April 3 - Candy Sanford
April 10: Karen McGee
All are welcome to show up for the Lenten studies. However, signing up in the parish hall this Sunday will help our chefs know how much soup to make. Thank you!
